Prime Ministers
Julia Gillard 2010 - Present
The Hon. Julia Gillard was sworn in as the 27th Prime Minister of Australia on 24 June 2010 and re-sworn in as Prime Minister on 14 September 2010 following the 2010 Federal Election.
The Prime Minister is the head of government and leader of the executive government. He or she leads the party or parties that command majority support in the House of Representatives. The Prime Minister is the chief adviser to the Governor-General.
Since The Australiana Fund was established many items of Australiana acquired by the Fund have been placed in the residences of the Prime Minister and Governor-General.
"[The four Official Residences] are more than just homes for the Prime Minister and Governor-General of the day. They provide the back drop for events of national and international significance as well as being showcases of Australian artistic and historical achievement for the many thousands of visitors to see and enjoy. Since its establishment in 1978, The Australiana Fund has not only raised the necessary funds to support its activities, but has located close to 200 items to fulfil the practical and decorative needs of these important historic establishments."
Hazel Hawke in an excerpt from The Australiana Fund Collection 1988
The Fund collects items of Australian significance and also memorabilia related to Australian politics and to Prime Ministers. Collecting items which relate to previous Prime Ministers is one of the Fund's current priorities. For example, the Terracotta bust of Australia's first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, by Nelson Illingworth c.1901 is part of the collection.
